About the Studio

Shore Cottage Studio is a visually stunning artists’ studio offering creative courses by the sea. Opened in 2014, the studio sits in the garden of the family home of the artists, on the tidal estuary of the River Dee on the Wirral, Merseyside in North West England. We have unrivalled, panoramic, inspirational views across to North Wales. Designed and built with teaching creative courses by the sea as its raison d’être it is truly an Amazing Space. You can find out more about our studio build (and how we came to be filmed for George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces) by clicking here.

We strive to exceed expectations in every aspect of our creative courses. We are three passionate teachers who excel in building confidence in a supportive atmosphere, we aim to be friendly, welcoming, and flexible.

Our house and studio are cut off by tides twice a day, and these varying tides, open views, and exposure to the elements make the Cottage and its immediate environment an ever changing, exciting, dynamic, and inspirational space. We work hard to preserve the natural beauty of our environment and to educate and encourage others to do the same. You can read more about our environmental credentials by visiting our Sustainability page.

We are confident that what we offer is so special that it deserves to be more than a hidden gem. We are passionate about our courses and we like to think big and shout loud when it comes to getting more folk to enjoy our experience. We know that once you step inside you will fall in love with the place and want to not only return but physically bring your friends by the hand and show off that you found us first!

We are under an hour’s drive from both Manchester Airport and Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport. You can drive from Central London or Cardiff in about 4 hours and Edinburgh in 4½.  If you prefer to travel by train Liverpool Lime Street is our nearest mainline station with journey times from London being a touch over 2 hours, journeying on from Lime Street involves a smaller Merseyrail train to West Kirby (30 minutes) and a 10 minute taxi ride or a 30 minute taxi door to door.

The studio itself is situated on the shore at the bottom of boulder clay cliffs in a Site of Specific Scientific Interest.  Our truly unique setting allows us to feel like we are in the middle of nowhere, and indeed we are cut off by the tides twice a day.  Parking is available at the nearby Thurstaston Country Park for a charge of £2 per day. The studio is accessed by a public footpath of steps with a handrail leading down the cliff onto the shore. There is then a short walk along the beach and a further few steps up into the grounds of Shore Cottage.

All of our courses are designed to make the most of our stunning and unique location and therefore involve some time for you to walk along the shore sketching, photographing, collecting and interacting with the environment.  If you would find accessing the studio or this interaction with the coast difficult for whatever reason we would love you to contact us to see if we can come up with any adjustments or solutions together.

Sue Barnes

Sue Barnes has lived and worked at Shore Cottage since she and her husband rescued it from dereliction in 1982. Her lifelong love of textiles prompted her to enrol in the City & Guilds’ Embroidery course, which then led to her studying Constructed Textiles at JMU. She graduated in 2003 with a BA (Hons) in Fashion and Textile Design.

In order to broaden her practice she went on to complete a Mixed Media Sculpture course before embarking on a study tour of India to participate in dyeing, printing and weaving workshops in Rajasthan. Her passion for collecting can be seen in her work, where she combines beach finds and rusted metal together with simple stitches to create her seashore-inspired cloth.

Sue leads the Explore Design Stitch courses here at Shore Cottage Studio.
