Newcastle Nativity 2007

Flashback Friday today is to 2007 and Kris’ life size nativity commission for Newcastle Cathedral.

Steel frames for the life size nativity

In the first Semester of his final year of his fine art degree Kris accepted a commission to design and make a life size nativity for Newcastle Cathedral. The sculptures had to not only be life size but had to be capable of being carried by school children in a procession.

Frames wrapped in chicken wire for life size nativity

Kris used mild steel frames welded together for the basic graphic shapes and then covered them with chicken wire and then torn strips of paper.

Here is Kris with the entire nativity. This nativity was designed to be used with a particular method of telling the story so included a larger than life size adult Jesus as well as the baby, both of whom needed to have outstretched arms and to be a different colour to the rest of the set. The whole set included; Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus and crib, three wise men, shepherd and three sheep, donkey and lying down cow and one larger than life size adult Jesus.
