Three Things; Spotlight – Creative Laser Cutting
This weeks’ spotlight is on the Creative Laser Cutting course, run by Kris Heath here at Shore Cottage Studio. This is a two day course which begins with an introduction to the laser cutting machine and the software used to control it, and a test run for all participants. This allows us to see how the machine works and what it can do, before moving on to personal projects with immediate hands on experience and friendly tuition.
Day Two can then be the start of a new project with confidence, or refining your original ideas from the previous day, using your new skills and confidence to explore and experiment. You can create custom jewellery in acrylic, wood, leather and felt, etch loved one’s handwriting into beach glass, turn child’s drawings into necklace or brooch form, laser cut card into an ornate display for framing – sometimes we may choose to combine this new technology with old, and create custom letterpress blocks from your original sketches, and make small prints, business cards or postcard designs.
The cutter is extremely versatile and when combined with Illustrator and Photoshop software can produce a range of etched and cut shapes. We will introduce ourselves to the laser cutter, working with a photograph, a quote, or even a simple sketch, tracing and manipulating them with the computer software, before transferring them to the laser cutter. Using a combination of starting ideas and various materials, you will create a finished piece to take home, but what form it takes is up to you.
No experience is necessary, you can be as involved as you like with the technology, and you can bring your own laptop if you prefer to work with something familiar. Bring along a written quote, a photograph, take your camera on to the beach, work with sketches or drawings – if you like, you can even enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of homemade cake while we digitise your images for you!
