Three Things; Spotlight – Explore Design Stitch October
This weekend Sue hosted an Explore, Design, Stitch course in the studio. Kathy returned having visited in August to do a photography course with Laura. This time she brought her daughter Katie with her for some relaxation, textile inspiration, and cake!
The course began with a walk along the shore to find inspiration. Kathy picked up some vivid pinky-red seaweed and Katie liked the blue mussel shells. The pair then donned aprons to experiment with colour, shape and texture by ‘mark making’ on paper.
Mood boards were created using the mark making and photographs of the inspirational objects. After lunch it was time for fabric dyeing, Sue demonstrated various dyeing techniques using the microwave then Kathy and Katie got stuck in. At the end of day one rust bundles were tied and soaked in tea to stain overnight.
Day two began with the reveal of the rust marked fabrics followed by stitching. Sue encouraged experimentation with simple stitches to embellish the dyed fabrics. Kathy was particularly impressed with needlefelting which she had never tried before. Several different pieces were started, some finished but many more taken home to add to in the weeks to come.
Both Kathy and Katie enjoyed the relaxed pace of the course and the environment which allowed them to experiment with guidance. Katie said it didn’t feel like a course, more like going round to a friend’s house and playing with their stuff. We like this!
