Three Things; Spotlight – Laser Etching June 2015
Kris hosted a creative laser cutting two day course for Gary last week. Gary had been bought a gift voucher by his girlfriend and we put on a course just for him, as his busy schedule didn’t fit in with any of our published dates. Gary uses design software in his day job but had never seen a laser cutter before so it was an exciting two days.
Gary began by laser etching names of loved ones into various wood and stone surfaces to get to grips with how the instrument works. After stopping for a quick bit of flapjack the pair took a walk on the beach to find some suitable flat stones to etch. He chose to etch a Latin phrase into the grey stone, which was framed with a backing of handmade paper containing recycled banknotes, let’s hope it brings him luck and prosperity.
His magnum opus, however, was a lampshade inspired by our own oystercatcher shade that we have in the studio (and sell in the shop). Gary took the basic lampshade form, widened the slats and chose to adorn them with tracings of leaves. He cut out some of the leaves to have the light shine through and etched the outline of others. The design had to be carefully considered so that the final outcome balanced both aesthetically and physically. We photographed it in the studio laid out flat and Gary has promised to send us a photo when it is in situ.

What did Gary have to say about his two days?
“To the Shore Cottage Studio Gang…. Thank You for everything! And thanks for widening my horizons of the creative world. I had a great time learning all about laser cutting and etching – didn’t realise previously what was involved. I’ve really enjoyed my time here, thanks again!” (Gary, Liverpool)
