Three Things; Spotted – Yellow Lichen

Spotted yellow lichens

This week we have spotted vibrant yellow lichens at Shore Cottage Studio, growing on our overgrown hedge.

Supine lichen

Lichens are fascinating as they are a not a single organism but rather a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an algae and/or a Cyanobacteria. You can learn more about lichens from The British Lichen Society

We love the surprisingly vivid shade of these lichens and the wonderful cup like forms each take – almost like a dramatic paisley pattern.

What makes these lichen even more interesting is that they have grown on the twisted tendrils of an old part of overgrown hedge so the forms they take are wonderfully sculptural.

Inspiration is everywhere if you look!
