Three Things; Works in Progress – Memento Mori Mixed Media in Progress
Today’s Work in Progress comes from Laura Heath and builds upon some previous fused glass work. Laura has been looking at the urban environment and photographing it in black and white. The strong linearity is quite appealing.
Laura likes noticing that when a man made urban environment starts to decay the natural environment takes over, reclaiming the space. The weeds on the cracks of the pavement reminds us that ‘this too shall pass’ each time nature encroaches on the urban environment acts as a ‘Memento Mori’. This is Laura’s first foray into mixed media using photo collage and fused glass elements. These fused glass fern fronds have been formed on microscope coverslips and are very fragile. Here Laura is glueing jewellery wire to the back of them ready for mounting them in front of the photographic element of the piece which is entitled ‘Hinc Illae Lacrimae’ Hence These Tears.
This is the photographic element of ‘Hinc Illae Lacrimae’ the original photograph (taken in Birkenhead) has been augmented with an acetone transfer print of high contrast image of fern fronds (taken on Thurstaston Common). The fused glass elements will be mounted in front and away from the photographic element so the light can shine through the glass giving a sense of the fragility, colour and vibrancy of the ‘living’ elements.
This is the photographic element for a second piece entitled ‘Tempus Edax Rerum’ Time is the Devourer of Things it is comprised of an acetone transfer print of fuchsia buds on a photograph of Egerton Bridge in Birkenhead. Laura will make fused glass fuchsia over the coming weeks to add to the piece.
There will be a final piece entitled ‘Ultima Forsan’ Perhaps the Last to complete the tryptich.
