Creative Composition for Photography

One Day - £100 per person

Don't take boring pictures!

If you would like to take more interesting photographs, rather than just snaps, then this is the course for you. Ideal for couples and groups with mixed photo knowledge and experience, everyone can benefit with no prior knowledge required or assumed. This gentle day begins with an illustrated talk on composition with examples and discussion, over biscuits and tea/coffee.

We then head out on a photo walk whatever the weather so make sure you dress sensibly. Enjoy a home made lunch of fresh soup and warm bread then review your shots with the group and go home with a framed print to be proud of.

This course can be a stand alone day and assumes no previous knowledge. Any camera at all can be used, even your camera phone. No equipment snobbery here! If you are unsure as to if your camera is suitable or have any questions please do email Laura, the course tutor and she can advise.

An ideal add on to any of our other courses, if you first came to visit in the summer and fancy a winter shoot, or you are just missing the studio and the biscuits. Escape for the day and see how different the same walk can be depending on the weather, the light, even your mood.

As the course includes nurturing small-group tuition and a nutritious lunch, all you need to bring on the day is your camera.

Mastering Manual Mode

One Day - £100 per person

A day of taking full control of your camera.

This one day course is designed for those who want to take full creative control of their cameras. Perhaps you have been shooting in S, A, Tv, or Av modes and are ready to make the leap to M mode. This course is not for total beginners and will assume knowledge of F Stops and Shutter Speeds. It is an ideal follow on from both our one day ‘Get Off Auto Mode’ and our two day 'Photography: Button Pressing and Composition' courses. Brilliant as a refresher or top up or after buying a new camera. If you are unsure as to if your camera or your existing knowledge/experience is suitable or have any questions please do email Laura, the course tutor and she can advise.

The day begins with a presentation on manual photography and in camera light metering with examples and discussion over biscuits and tea/coffee. Practice in the studio with some more complex setups to cement your learning.

We then head out on a photo walk whatever the weather so make sure you dress sensibly. A home made lunch of fresh soup and warm bread is followed by review and discussion of the images from the photo walk. The best shot from each participant will then be printed and framed to take home.

As the course includes nurturing small-group tuition and a nutritious lunch, all you need to bring on the day is your camera. A tripod can be useful for creative shots of the tide but we can not guarantee the tide will be in for any specific course date until nearer the date.

Laser Cutting and Etching

Two Days - £200 per person

This course is suitable for all abilities, and we welcome beginners with no previous experience of laser cutting and etching. Full design support and technical help will be given, and you will produce etched and cut pieces from a range of materials, with the potential to move on to a personal project. We have a stock of laser materials in the studio, including laser plywood, various colours of acrylic sheet, laser rubber (for making stamps), card, and eco paper. You can also cut and etch various found materials, such as sandstone, slate, driftwood, feathers and glass. If you have a specific material or colour range you would like to work with, please contact us beforehand to ensure we have it in stock ready for your course.

We use simple drawing tools on our laptops, and can also work with sketches and photographs by scanning them into the computer. We have run more technically-biased courses for school and college technicians and teaching staff, looking to explore the technology and use a variety of materials. We also have people who are looking to buy their own laser cutter and want to have a play around first, as well as those just looking for a creative break.

All tuition, materials, refreshments and lunches are provided. We can provide you with a laptop and mouse, but you can bring your own if you prefer. We can supply you with any files you make on the day, and you are welcome to bring a USB stick with you, or alternatively we can send them to you via fileshare. We will also send you a follow up e-mail with a list of any materials and suppliers discussed on the day.

Laser Cut Jewellery

One Day - £100 per person

A great introduction to laser cut courses - design and make a bespoke laser cut statement necklace, choosing all the elements and assembling yourself.

Our 1 day laser cutting courses are a perfect introduction to laser cutting, and with computer-aided design kept to a minimum, you will make something personal and unique, quickly and easily. You will begin by choosing some pieces from our wide selection of laser cut ‘blanks’. Using these to plan your design, you will lay out your chosen length of chain and begin to build your statement necklace, experimenting with shape combinations and spacing.

When your design is complete, you will then select your acrylic colours and we will begin to cut the pieces you need on the laser cutter. Full guidance is given throughout, and all the necessary tools are provided.

Once all your pieces are ready, you will spend the afternoon assembling your necklace, attaching the necessary rings and clasps before boxing it up and taking your creation home.

If your preferred dates are not available and you can round up a friend please send us an email and we will do our best to accommodate you on a bespoke course. For an additional charge we can offer a one-to-one session, subject to availability of dates. To buy a gift voucher for a course click here.

Laser Cut Map

One Day - £100 per person

A great introduction to laser cut courses - design and make a bespoke wooden map in a frame, choosing all the elements and assembling yourself.

Our 1 day laser cutting courses make a great introduction to laser cutting, offering the perfect setting to make something personal and unique, quickly and easily.

On our laser cut map course, you will begin by choosing a location from an online map – somewhere special to you, perhaps a meeting place, a favourite holiday destination or your childhood home – then trace around all the separate elements using the computer. Simply outline the path of the roads, mark out the buildings and then combine these in different ways to make your custom map.

Choose from a selection of woods, including birch, oak and walnut, to show roads, surrounding areas and buildings. You can inset the buildings into the landscape, perhaps have some stand proud of their surroundings, or lightly etch them into the background. Cut a prominent feature from mirrored acrylic, combine veneers and experiment with different colours, creating matching and contrasting features – it’s completely up to you.

Once your design is complete we will begin to cut the pieces you need on the laser cutter. Full guidance is given throughout, and all the necessary tools are provided.

One everything is ready, spend the afternoon assembling your map and setting it into a deep box frame. Etch a dedication, grid reference or quote and attach it to the mount, the finishing touch to a truly unique piece of artwork to take home.

If your preferred dates are not available and you can round up a friend please send us an email and we will do our best to accommodate you on a bespoke course. For an additional charge we can offer a one-to-one session, subject to availability of dates. To buy a gift voucher for a course click here.
