Design Dye Stitch – 10/11 January

If you would like to design and make your own hand stitched textiles, this is the course for you. I can show you how to find inspiration in your surroundings, explore ideas through mark making on paper, dye your own colour palette of fabric and threads, and translate your designs using simple hand stitches.

Day one starts with a walk on the beach collecting interesting materials to inspire your work. Back in the studio we explore the shapes, colours, and textures using; rubbings, printing, painting, and resist techniques to inspire your own unique designs. After a delicious lunch we move on to dyeing fabric and threads.

Day two is all about stitching – whatever your ability I will be there to gently guide and encourage, and help you to choose, and learn, the right stitches to enhance your unique design. Our relaxed and supportive environment means that complete beginners and experienced stitchers can work side by side.

You will take home a framed finished piece as well as a sketchbook bursting with ideas and a wide range of dyed samples for you to develop further.

If your preferred dates are not available and you can round up a couple of friends, please send us an email and we will do our best to accommodate you on a bespoke course. For an additional charge we can offer a one-to-one session, subject to availability of dates. To buy a gift voucher for a course click here.

Hi, I'm Sue and I teach the Textile courses here at Shore Cottage Studio.

Between  courses I have time to develop my own work, I love the unpredictability of natural dyes and rust marks and usually piece backgrounds together using my dyed calico experiments. The garden here at Shore Cottage provides me with plenty of plants to use in my Solar dye Jars.

All of my work is hand stitched and often involves sketching with a pencil or printing with found objects directly onto the cloth before I begin

I like to work from nature and used seed heads as inspiration for my Seed Box collection - a series of stitched pieces put together in a wonderful old metal box which opens out to display the work inside.

Almost forty years ago I moved into the derelict shell that was Shore Cottage and began the huge renovation that turned it into our family home.

When the youngest of my four children started school I took a part time Arts Foundation Course at West Cheshire Collage. I have always loved knitting and sewing so went on to do a BA Hons. Degree in Fashion and Textile Design at Liverpool John Moores University, graduating just before my fiftieth birthday.

When the opportunity arose to work from our own studio I completed a Teaching In The Life Long Learning Sector course at Wirral Met. College.  I am really enjoying passing on my knowledge and skills, especially to those people who don't think that they are creative

Helping people to see the potential in a few simple materials, enjoying the company of others and sharing stories and ideas is what I like to do best.

I have met so many interesting people along the way and it really is never too late to learn.

My mum and I had a wonderful time on the two day creative textile course, run by Sue. We learned new skills and processes in a fabulous location; both the surroundings and teaching were inspiring! The welcome was warm, the biscuits, cakes and lunches were delicious and the tea and coffee on tap.
We were delighted with our resulting textile samples, homemade sketchbook full of exciting experiments and framed textile outcome. I would recommend this course to anyone! Thank you Sue and all at Shore cottage.

I was instructed on dyeing various fabrics and threads using different techniques and encouraged to think about design ideas for the textile picture to be stitched the next day. Using the fabrics and threads I had dyed the day before, I put together and stitched a textile landscape which was then framed as a finished piece and I took this away, together with all the unused fabrics etc.
The workshop is excellent, but I can't emphasise enough how special Sue, Laura and Kris make the whole experience. Their ability to put everyone at ease, encourage and show infinite patience is what makes all their courses a must - as well as the wonderful hospitality - lunch and afternoon tea are yummy!
If you are thinking of a Shore Cottage Studio workshop - don't hesitate - you won't regret it

This was a really wonderful course in a spectacular setting. The studio is gorgeous and the welcome very warm. Sue is a great teacher and can adapt easily to the skill level of participants. I came away marvelling at the attention to detail and the participants' comfort and well-being. So much love has been put into the studio and the classes. It is really inspirational. I am planning to come back with friends. Life affirming
