Join me, Laura, for a Two Day Relaxed Pace Introduction to Help You Get Off Auto Mode.

Friendly tuition and gentle theory at a slower pace to help you get more from your digital SLR camera, bridge camera, mirrorless, or compact system camera.

I've designed this course for the complete beginner with a new camera, or those that have had a camera for a while but want to move on from automatic mode. If you feel guilty for not using your camera 'properly' or feel scared to explore its functions and prefer to stick to the safety of auto mode this is the course for you. We really start from zero with no prior knowledge assumed or required.

This particular version of our popular 'Get Off Auto Mode' course gives you double the tutor time of our standard version and is excellent if you feel you may need more time to take in the theory, and would like more practice to cement your new skills. The course content is identical to 'Get Off Auto Mode' it is simply spread over two days to allow you time and space to ask loads of questions and truly benefit from my patient and friendly approach and helpful feedback.

You will be amazed at how much improvement you can make in just two days, your confidence and understanding will grow and grow. Our studio is not at all like school, and our small group sizes (no more than six on a course) ensure no-one is left behind or sat struggling.

So what will you actually learn?

Well, if you want to know how to freeze motion or deliberately blur the action I will show you how using the shutter controls. If you’d like to know how to make a subject stand out by softening the background, I can show you how using the aperture controls. Don't worry if you've never heard the words shutter and aperture before, that's what coming on the course is for!

Bring your digital camera, a tripod if you have one, and some enthusiasm and we will supply the rest. This two day course includes nurturing small-group tuition and a nutritious lunch. You will learn the theory of shutters and apertures and master the use of these two camera modes, an ideal start for those who are totally new to DSLR or Bridge photography.

This course can be taken as a precursor to any of our other photo courses as a confidence booster, why not see if you get on with Laura’s relaxed teaching style before committing to further study. You can follow this course with our 'Take Interesting Photos' day and then onto 'Mastering Manual Mode' day when you are ready to take the next steps.

You will need to use a camera that has modes to alter the shutter speed and aperture (usually found on the top of the camera on a circular dial, or in the menus - denoted by either S and A, or Tv and Av modes) If you are unsure as to if your camera is suitable please do email me (Laura), the course tutor and I can advise.

If your preferred dates are not available and you can round up two friends please send us an email and we will do our best to accommodate you on a bespoke course.

For an additional charge we can offer a one-to-one session, subject to availability of dates email me (Laura), to find out more.

Hi, I'm Laura and I run the Photography Courses Here at Shore Cottage Studio.

I love to experiment with my own photography and am equally happy using a digital camera or lurking in the darkroom developing negatives and prints. One of the best things that I like about photography is the ability to show people something they can't see for themselves - you may have walked this route many times, but have you ever noticed this?

I love working from Shore Cottage Studio as the landscape and weather are always changing - the light can be totally different from one moment to the next and as a photographer that makes it interesting. (It is also the reason why all my photography courses begin in the studio where we have much more controllable light and objects to photograph) I have walked a similar photo walk route on my photography courses over the years and I can hand on heart say that no person has ever taken a shot the same as another, and that's the best bit - everyone has their own eyes and ideas.

I am a former forensic scientist and university lecturer and I love to teach. Starting Shore Cottage Studio has allowed me to get those wonderful teaching 'penny-drop' moments with people who want to learn, and are having a great time doing it, knowing there are no grades or exams to worry about.

I sometimes think that photographers talk a different language, full of jargon and numbers, and I work hard to explain concepts in a practical and easy to digest way and spend plenty of time going over key concepts to ensure no one is left behind and floundering. I work with a maximum of six course participants at a time so I can ensure everyone gets the attention they need. Having said that, I will work with a larger group if you all know each other well and don't mind a bit of chatter amongst yourselves whilst I get round the group.

If you are looking for easy to understand teaching and fast improvement in the pictures you take, with no camera snobbery and plenty of tea breaks, then this is the place to be!

  • Who Is This Course For?
  • I've got a camera and I know it can do more than Auto Mode but I'm not sure how to use other modes.
  • I'm not sure about using shutters and apertures, or even what they are.
  • I want to start right at the beginning with photography, or I wouldn't mind a recap from the beginning as it has been a while since I last looked at it.
  • I want a relaxed setting and friendly teaching, I need a gentle introduction.
  • I'm a bit frightened of my camera.
  • I need a confidence boost, I've tried to learn before with books, or someone helping me but I didn't understand the jargon - It all went over my head, too technical!
  • I am, or have been, unwell and I need something gentle and a sympathetic teacher to get me back to using my brain again.
  • Who Is This Course Not For?
  • I already use my camera confidently in TV, S, AV, or A modes.
  • I'm confident in shutter and aperture selection for creative photography
  • I would feel bored going over the basics as I feel I have them covered.
  • I would prefer a formal classroom style with exams and to work toward a certificate or qualification.
  • I am very comfortable with my camera and boldly experimenting on my own.
  • I've already got a grasp of the jargon and technical terms.
  • I like to learn at a fast pace and move on quickly.

"Laura provides a safe and very comfortable learning environment that is suitable for all levels and abilities which maintains a pace that you can properly process/absorb the information passed to you whilst putting it in to practice. By the end of the second day I was taking shots with my new camera that I even surprise myself with. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking at starting up photography and I’m sure I will be returning in the future to attend one of her advance classes."

"Laura demonstrates great skill in delivering the material in a way that makes it easy to understand and uses various techniques to help things stick in your mind. A mix of presentation and practical application ensured that I came away with a depth of knowledge surprising to me, given that I can struggle to retain detail. I found Laura to be warm, genuine, intelligent and super creative. She provided a unique learning experience that to me felt a little like catching up with old friends...

I highly recommend Shore Cottage Studio and will certainly return for the advanced course."

"The 2-day photography course run by Laura was an absolute delight. The studio is right on the foreshore and boundless inspiration streams through the windows during her beautifully concise introductions to most of the basics of function and technique. I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone looking to get further momentum into their enthusiasm for photography whatever their level of experience. And the facility is not only charming but a warm hospitality greets you as soon as you cross the threshold. Many thanks to the Shore Cottage family for creating such a unique creative environment."
